It’s no secret that I’m a Tom Hanks fan!

He’s made some stellar movies, some duds, and some that others think were duds I loved. Today for grins and giggles, I’m sharing three favorite quotes from Tom Hanks movies.

1) “If it wasn’t hard, everyone would do it. That’s what makes it great.”

This iconic line comes from A League of Their Own. Hard things happen in this life, and sometimes we have to do those hard things. Just because it’s hard doesn’t mean you shouldn’t do it.

2) “Frank: What about you? Is there someone else? Kathleen Kelly: No. No, but… but there is the dream of someone else.”

This one comes from You’ve Got Mail. Frank and Kathleen are breaking up. Kathleen realized that she wants more from her life and her relationship. I think that dream of someone or something else drives us to try new things.

3) “My father says that almost the whole world is asleep. Everybody you know. Everybody you see. Everybody you talk to. He says that only a few people are awake, and they live in a state of constant total amazement.”

Joe vs. the Volcano is one of those films that many think was a dud, but there is something about this one that I love. I’ve watched it twice in the last few weeks because it keeps popping up as a recommended movie for me.

In the movie, Patricia says this to Joe one night while they’re sailing to the island, where Joe will sacrifice himself in the volcano to save the Waponi people. I think this is true of many people as we get older. I know I see it in myself sometimes. When we’re so caught up in the day-to-day that it’s like we’re just sleepwalking through life and missing those little, unforgettable moments that are all around us.

There you have it. I could go on with many more quotes from Tom’s movies, but this is Three Things Thursday, so I’ll leave you with these.

Let’s chat: Do you have a favorite movie quote? What makes it special for you?
